On other lakes in the surrounding area spear fishing is allowed so why is Cass Lake being discriminated against? Isn't it time to reopen spearing on Cass Lake?
This is a short-term solution to your problems. What happens to your tourism when you not only ruin the northern population, but the muskie population as well? The ban should be in place or lifted based on DNR and science...not by the dollar.
I for one will not support any business associated with lifting this ban. There are plenty of lakes around the area where one can spear.
Why target Cass Lake only for spearing? What about all of the other lakes that allow spearing? Will you boycott fishing on these lakes just because they allow spearing too? Cass Lake can be shared by all types of sportsmen.
Cass is fine how it is. There are 100s of other lakes in the area very close that can be speared on. Keep this one how it is, part of the reason it has the pike population it does is because there is no spearing. Just because there is bigger pike doesn't mean they need to be exploited, plus some muskie will perish too due to the ban being lifted, an unnecessary loss.
That poll in the Cass Lake Times is garbage and everyone knows it.

If you look at Andrusia, Kitchi, and Pike, their average pike size is at least a pound smaller then Cass. This is directly because there is no spearing allowed. If you look at all of those lakes you'll also find that the muskie and walleye fishing is worse then Cass. Over harvest of big pike = hammer handles. Hammer handle pike = a decline in the over all fishery.

I have no problem with spearing and I would not boycott other lakes because the DNR allowed spearing for a reason. Cass is closed for a reason...you are trying to go over the DNR's head on this, and that is why I would boycott Cass.
The difference between Cass and other muskie lakes is that Cass is a "natural" muskie lake. That means the muskie population is maintained exclusively through natural reproduction. Whenever a body of water has an abundence of hammer handle pike it is detremental to the natural reproduction of walleyes and muskies.
If spearing is allowed the spearer will hammer the largest fish (the reason why Cass is so appealing) and all that will be left is hammerhandles (just like Andrusia, Kitchi and Pike). Those lakes are also terrible muskie and pike lakes as the hammer handles over-run the place. We caught over 60 hammer handles fishing Kitchi in one 3 hour trip.
If the DNR wants to keep the ban on spearing fish on Cass Lake, then it should be a total ban for everyone. For people to say that, allowing spear fishing on Cass Lake would destroy the natural fisheries of the lake and decrease the size and quanity of Muskies and Pike, you also have to acknowledge the fact that their is spear fishing aloud on Cass Lake now. And yet the lake is doing just fine. The DNR and Muskie groups all talk about how great Cass is and a prime example of a natural fisheries, and like to point to the spearing ban as the reason. But for one reason our another they fail to mention that their are fish being legally speared on Cass Lake and yet the big fish flurish. After the first ten years of the ban, the data was inconclusive as to if the ban was responsible for creating the bigger fish. Yet it was made permanent, based on Bio-Sciences, nope, It was made permanent based on Politics. Yet now they want the ban to stay based on Bio-Sciences. Well what science would that be. The will of a special interest group regulating the lives of many for personal gain type of science. And now when the political tables are turned against them, they cry foul. I do beleive the DNR should be making the decision about the environment and not the Legislature, but when they refuse to answer to the people they serve then something must be done. The bills in question only require the DNR to open spearing on Cass, they do not say anything on how to manage it. That is part of the DNR's job.
That photo on the home pages of your failed blog shows everything anybody needs to know about spearing. Spearing is for fat, drunken, aimless, abusive people who don't care about anything other than themselves. It's a barbaric practice that should not be given credence by calling it "tradition." Other traditions of the tribe include: child abuse, keeping junk yards for front yards, drinking and drugging during pregnancy-gotta love those little cross-eyed, cleft palated little future inmates, gang involvement, junk food worshiping, incest, and abusing power under the guise of "spirituality." The last thing these people need to worry about is one more way to bring God's creatures to a violent death.
